Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant
by Ulysses Grant
Arguably, the first auto-biography ever written by a president. Completed just before his death in 1885 it chronicles the events that led up to the victory of the North in the Civil War in the first person perspective. While the book is a "complete" biography, beware that Grantt was mainly a military leader. If reading about the violent parts of the country's history is not "your thing", consider skipping this one. Also note that there are several annotated versions of this text. This recommended book is not one of those.
